Hollywood-Crawford Door Co. offers garage door safety tips, free professional inspections
Special to NHOME
Garage doors are the largest, heaviest moving devices in most homes, yet many homeowners rarely think about them until something goes wrong.
In fact, most homeowners neglect basic maintenance and simply ignore their garage doors until they don’t work properly, according to one survey. The International Door Association (IDA), found that 54 percent of homeowners have never had a garage door and/or garage door opener safety check performed by a professional garage door/dealer installer.
“That’s a mistake,” says Randy Oliver, president of Hollywood-Crawford Door Co., which has served the San Antonio area since 1947.
“As long as an overhead door is working properly, many homeowners make the mistake of ignoring it,” Oliver explains. “But it’s important to test the safety features regularly and not wait until something goes wrong.”
“Not only are overhead garage doors the largest moving objects in our homes, but our children and pets are often nearby when they are moving, so it’s especially important to keep the door in top working order.”
Hollywood-Crawford advises homeowners to conduct a series of quick, do-it-yourself tests to quickly determine if a garage door is operating safely:
1/ Check the sides of the garage door for properly installed photo eyes (black sensors), mounted no higher than 6 inches off the floor.
2/ Block the photo-eye with an object and press the garage door opener’s close button. The door should not close.
3/ Lay a 1.5-inch high object on the ground in the door’s path and press the close button. The door should reverse off this object.
If the door fails any of these tests, call a reputable, professional garage door service company. Questions to ask: does the business have a local brick-and-mortar office? Are they well established in the community, with recent referrals from satisfied customers? Are they insured? Research their reputation with the Better Business Bureau, Angie’s List or other review services. See if they are members of the industry’s most reliable trade associations, such as the International Door Association, which has strict ethics policies, or the Institute of Door Dealer Education (IDEA), which offers certification for door technicians. Make sure you have a firm estimate before authorizing any work.
Hollywood-Crawford offers free professional safety inspections throughout the company’s service area, which includes San Antonio, Boerne, Bulverde and New Braunfels. Hollywood-Crawford’s no-obligation inspection includes testing the reversing features of the garage door opener and the balance of the overhead garage door.
“An annual inspection by a professional can help identify a small problem and fix it before it turns into a bigger problem,” Oliver says.
