As a child, Jennifer Browning Shemwell was always amazed that selling real estate could make her mother so happy. “She would come home excited and tell us about her day and about the great people she had met,” she said. “Only incidentally did she mention selling … just happy memories.” Shemwell smiled.
Elegant from first glance, Shemwell lights up a room when she enters stylishly dressed and smiling, inquiring how everyone is and complimenting them on their dress and appearance. No wonder clients cling to her like bees to honey.
“I grew up knowing about real estate, but never thought I would be a part of the business,” she recalled. “I got my B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Yale University. My first job was with the government, which turned out to be a dream assignment at a World’s Fair in Seville, Spain. Since I speak fluent Spanish, I became a tour guide and I loved it. It was one of the greatest years of my life.”
Born and raised in San Antonio, Shemwell always appreciated the finer things in life and always thought she would eventually be part of the luxury real estate market. Once back in San Antonio, she realized she wanted to join her mom, Phyllis Browning, in the work that made her so content.
Fortunately, she inherited her mom’s easygoing, nurturing manner and natural knack for matching people with property. In no time, they were more than mother and daughter – they were friendly (but serious!) competitors striving to break records, which they have done consistently, selling between $20 and $30 million of properties in the million dollar-plus range.
Married to Overland Partners architect Robert Shemwell, Jennifer Shemwell has successfully balanced her sometimes demanding career with successfully raising three children: Paris, 13; Browning, 11-and-a-half; and Reed, 10.
Are any of her children leaning toward real estate? “Too soon to tell,” she smiled, “but I hope so. I’d like them to be blessed with the opportunity of helping people find the home of their dreams and making the process an easy, pleasant experience.”
Specializing in luxury properties in the Alamo Heights area, Shemwell is currently excited about her success with The Broadway high-rise luxury condos on Broadway and Hildebrand. “So far, we have them 40 percent occupied and have sold two of the penthouses, which are amazing,” said the enterprising Shemwell, smiling. “And I think we will have it completely occupied next year.”
Why do so many real estate clients respond so positively to Shemwell? “I think it’s the Golden Rule my mom taught me as a child: Treat others as you would like to be treated,” she replied. “You can’t miss if you really care and want to do the best for your clients. I feel I was born to be a luxury real estate matchmaker.”
